Introduction to Agility will be taught by Donna Thompson.  The focus of these classes will be on obedience and control skills in order to provide a strong foundation for not only agility but also other canine sports such as Rally.  The course is designed to develop a strong dog-handler relationship that is crucial in all successful canine sports programs.  The dogs will be introduced to some beginner obstacles, learning how to negotiate each obstacle in order to build confidence prior to tackling an actual agility course.  The class fee includes access to the practice course on Monday evenings from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm or on Thursdays from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm for the duration of the 6-week class.  Completion of a Basic Obedience class is highly recommended prior to enrollment in the Foundation Skills class.  At a minimum, the dog should understand the commands "heel", "sit", "down", and "stay".

Dogs must be at least 6 months of age and in good health in order to participate in agility classes.  Dogs with certain conditions such as luxating patella, cardiac disease, hip dysplasia, etc., will not be accepted into the class.  Proof of current vaccinations (including Bordetella) must be provided prior to the first class.

For those dogs who need to learn some "manners", who need a refresher course, or just need to learn how to socialize a bit more.

The trainer for the Basic Obedience classes is Greg Franklin.  Greg, who owns ABC Dog Training, has been involved in training dogs since 1990 when he took on the challenge of working with an extremely destructive Samoyed, aptly named "Cujo".  Remarkably, Cujo went on to win "Best in Breed" at a local A.K.C. show.  Greg's focus turned to law enforcement training when he acquired his first German Shepherd Dog.  He became a State Certified Law Enforcement Instructor and worked with such agencies as the Riverdale Police Department, the City of Decatur, and Clayton County Narcotics.  But the love of pet dogs drew him back to the private sector in 2001.  Greg not only conducts the adult obedience classes, he also teaches the agility classes and offers private instructions either here at DDC or at your home.  For more information on Greg, check his website at www.abcdogtraining.net.

Adult Obedience II (Intermediate) is geared toward those dogs who have some mastery of basic obedience commands such as “sit”, “down”, “stay”, etc., but are inconsistent in following those commands, particularly when off leash.  Taught by Greg Franklin, this class will utilize common, everyday distractions (e.g. knocking on doors, other dogs walking by, leaving the room, etc.) while working on reinforcing obedience commands.  Emergency commands will also be introduced in order to better simulate real life situations.  The Canine Good Citizen test will be administered on the final night of class.

The Competitive Obedience Series is taught by Nancy Lewis.  Nancy began her formal obedience training in 1995 under the tutelage of Nancy Patton, a nationally known obedience competitor, teacher and lecturer.  Nancy became an instructor herself after the death of Ms. Patton in 2000.  Since that time, her dogs have earned multiple "High in Trials" (HIT), and High Combined (HC)  awards for top scoring dog in obedience trials.  He dog, Cooper, is the first "OTCh" (Obedience Trial Champion) south of I-20 in the metropolitan Atlanta area.  There are only approximately 100 OTCh titles earned in the US each year.

The Novice level of competitive obedience is for dogs just getting started in the sport.  Exercises include:
- Heel on Leash & Figure Eight (dog learns to watch handler and adjust pace to stay with handler)
- Heel Free - done off leash
- Stand for Examination
- Recall - provides handler with ability to call dog and get an immediate response at all times
- Long Sit (1 minute)
- Long Down (3 minutes)
