Remember the 51 pit
bulls that were seized from Michael Vick's Bad Newz
Kennels back in 2007? Sports Illustrated's Jim
Gorant has written about ASPCA's
remarkable rehabilitation of many of these
unfortunate canines in his new book,
The Lost
Dogs, to be published on September 16, 2010.
Parade Magazine's August 15 cover story highlights
the tale of 'Jonny' and the painstaking work that
was done to help him recover. Click

Dear DDC Family Member:
Isn't it amazing how quickly summer passed
us by. The only thing left to remind us it
was here is the heat! Remember, dogs left
outside with no shelter or water, or in a
car even for just a few minutes,
can suffer heat stroke. Don't let this
happen to your furkid.
And speaking of summer's end, it's Back to
School time for our canine kids as well.
See below for information on our next
Obedience Classes.
Try to stay cool and remember, it'll be the
holidays before we know it!

Dog Crazy?
The Parade
Magazine article highlighted above puts into
print something that we've been telling
clients all along - that certain dogs:
...react
excessively to external stimuli. If
they see a bird they want to chase, they
chase it. Learning even the simplest
command forces them to tune into their
internal monitor, especially when the
command is paired with rewards such as
food or affection. Suddenly the dog has
to make a choice. 'Do I do what I want
or wait and do what has been asked?
Good things happen to me when I wait
rather than simply following my
impulses.' Teaching a dog...to sit is
essentially retraining the way he
thinks.
Basic
Obedience is essential for helping your dog
to learn how to calm himself. It also
instills a sense of order, which all dogs,
being creatures of habit, thrive on. Our
next Basic Obedience Class will begin on
Thursday, August 26, at 7:00 p.m. The class
runs for 6 sessions (finishing on September
30) and the cost is $90. The final Basic
and Intermediate Obedience Classes of 2010
will begin on October 14 and will conclude
on the Thursday before Thanksgiving. The
cost of the Intermediate class is $100 and
includes the Canine Good Citizen test fee.
And to show you how important we feel
training is, we're offering a 10%
discount off your class fee if you
enroll a friend and his/her dog along
with yours. It's a win-win-win! You
win with your discount, and you
both win by having better behaved
furkids! So sign up today by clicking
here or call us at
678-817-1600.

Reservations Please
In
the past we have required a deposit to
reserve a space for your dog for peak
periods. While this has been a satisfactory
way to prevent people from using us as a
"back-up" plan and then not bothering to
show up or call to cancel, it can be
inconvenient for our customers. Therefore,
we have decided to implement the system they
use in people hotels - namely requiring a
credit card number to secure your
reservation. The numbers will be stored in
an encrypted database that will be
accessible only by DDC management staff, and
will be deleted at the end of the dog's stay
(unless otherwise instructed).
When you call to make a reservation for any
of the times listed below, you will be
transferred to the receptionist who will ask
you for your credit card information. If
you need to cancel your reservation, you
must do so no later than 2 days prior to
your scheduled arrival date. Otherwise, you
card will be charged the cost of a single
night of boarding ($35.00) for each
dog. When calling to cancel a reservation,
please ask to speak to the receptionist.
She will confirm your cancellation by
sending you an email.
We hope this makes peak period reservations
a little simpler. Here is a list of the
peak periods:
Winter Break (February)
Spring Break (April)
Memorial Day (Weekend that includes last
Monday in May)
July 4 Holiday (July 2 - 5)
Thanksgiving Weekend (Wednesday - Sunday)
Christmas Break (December 22 - January 1)

Move Over, Rover
Do
you let your dog sleep in your bed? Do you
worry about it being unhealthy? Well,
there's good news. According to
ScienceDaily,
"Dog owners are more likely to share germs
with pets by not washing hands than by
sleeping with their dog, or getting licks on
the face." Dr. Kate Stenske, a research
veterinarian at Kansas State University,
said, "the finding that these human-animal
bonding behaviors aren't more likely to
spread germs is good news because there are
physical and psychological benefits of pet
ownership."
So move over
and make room for Fido. (Or shall we say
maybe he'll make room for you.)
